Occasionally while installing fixtures with Django, you might find yourself running into this error:

IntegrityError: columns app_label, model are not unique

What is happening is you’re trying to install a fixture for a model(/table) that django has already dynamically created data for. This is usually either the django_content_types table, or auth_users.

One way to fix this is to omit these from your datadump like so:

python manage.py dumpdata --format=json --exclude=contenttypes

That’s all well and good unless you have things like GenericForeignKeys that need to match up with the content-types and data. To get around this, just delete the content types you don’t want after you syncdb and make any migrations. (Note: Depending on your circumstance, you may want to exclude and/or delete the auth stuff as well)

$ python manage.py syncdb
$ python manage.py migrate
sqlite> delete from django_content_type where 1=1;

Now that those are out of the way, feel free to load your data without any errors.

$ python manage.py loaddata dev_data.json
Installed 6470 object(s) from 1 fixture(s)

Siddhartha is the story about a man’s journey toward enlightenment. After having read this book, I realized that it has many parallels with America’s favorite family: The Simpsons. I wrote this quick summary and article to prove my long held point that The Simpsons may seem like a low-brow show on the surface, but watch and listen and you’ll see that <del></del>there are very more high-brow and intellectual things about it. The Simpsons <del>is</del> was one of the smartest shows on T.V.

As a child Siddhartha is taught sacred rituals by brahmin which leaves him feeling unfulfilled spiritually all through his childhood. When he gets older, Siddhartha stubbornly pushes his dad into blessing his decision to go into the forest and train to become a shramana. Govinda, his friend, has decided Siddhartha is destine for great things chooses to follow him. After a few years pass, Siddhartha and Govinda have trained themselves in abstaining from the ways of the world. They have learned to fast, wait, and think. Despite gaining these skills, both men still feel spiritually unfulfilled. As the years go one, they hear a rumor of a buddha teaching in distant gardens. Govinda and Siddhartha decide to travel to this garden and listen to the buddha give a lesson. Govinda is enthralled with this teaching and stays to become a monk under Gotama, The Perfect One, while Siddhartha is not persuaded that this is the path he must follow.

It is in this way that Lisa Simpson is much like Govinda. She follows the teachings of others, including Buddha without going out on her own to experience it for herself. Govinda follows Siddhartha into the desert. Lisa follows her family to church. As soon as she makes a decision on her own to become Buddhist, she goes as far as planting a bohdi tree in the family’s backyard so she can achieve enlightenment, exactly as Buddha did.

Homer on the other hand, shows many traits of Siddhartha, and Siddhartha of Homer. Siddhartha stumbles upon the Buddha and tells him why he will not stay and become a disciple: “You have found liberation from death. This came to you as a result of your own seeking on your own path, through thought, through meditation, through realization, through enlightenment. It did not come to you through a teaching! And that is my idea, O Exalted One–nobody attains enlightenment through a teaching.” Homer parallels this by telling Lisa “Stupid risks are what make life worth living. Now your mother, she’s the steady type and that’s fine in small doses, but me, I’m a risk-taker. That’s why I have so many adventures!”

This heuristic approach to life is one that leads both Homer and Siddhartha into making many mistakes, all of which they ultimately learn from. Homer takes a risk with the cherry picker to find Lisa and succeeds despite getting his head stuck in between a bridge. Siddhartha learns how to pleasure a woman, make money, gamble it all away, drink wine, and enjoy all the worldly pleasures. Siddhartha makes these mistakes and realizes he is miserable so he walks away from it all and begins to live the life as a humble ferryman.

As a ferryman, Vasudeva teaches Siddhartha how to listen to the river. Upon mastering this he comes across Govinda. Govinda is seeking a wise ferryman to listen to the lessons he has to give. The lesson Siddhartha gives Govinda, “For him the river was a god. For many years he did not know that every wind, cloud, bird, or beetle is equally divine and knows and can teach just as much as the venerable river”, is exactly the conclusion Homer comes to when he decides to stop going to church, “Hey, what’s the big deal about going to some building every Sunday? I mean, isn’t God everywhere?”.

Both The Simpsons and Siddhartha teach us to experience life on our own path. Doing so will enrich our lives with experiences that cannot be taught.

Get yourself some enlightenment:

It’s that time of year to renew your EA Sports subscriptions. It has been slowly increasing over the years, $30, $50, and now $60. Is FIFA 2012 worth the scrapes on your knees that you’ve gotten working to afford this game?

First, a bit of history. The year was 2008. We were enjoying Fallout 3, playing up some Left 4 Dead, and a select diaper-wearing few of us were working on bringing down the Lich King. This is the year FIFA finally overtook the long time champion Pro Evolution Soccer as best soccer game, and they’ve been steadily holding, as Luda would say, “the numba’ one spot”. FIFA08 shouldn’t have been the better game, but it was. When 2009 rolled around, all the tweaks that EA had been playing with turned this franchise into a money making powerhouse. 09 was the best FIFA game to date, with many advancements in game play, including realistically having to muscle out your attacker/defender as well as forcing you to craft through balls and crosses that are more the right amount of difficulty to pull off. It was also the first game to make me literally throw a controller. (And it’s still the only franchise that still gives me that rush, with an exception to CMR Rally/Dirt.) FIFA10 and FIFA11 built upon the success of 09 bringing features like improved attacking options and 360 degree ball control. I think I speak for all of us when I say we all really love the 360 ball control. Mmm.

Now that FIFA12 has been out for a week and some change, and I’ve already purchased a a new controller to ravish, I reckon I’ve put enough game time in to give it a proper Geek Gauntlet once over. I know what you’re thinking, “GG shouldn’t this game be reviewed by a fratboy with a backpack full of Axe Body spray and Natty Light while having a seat with Chris Hansen?” Probably but this is a much more honest and much less dirty review.

Booting into the game you will have to sit through the ever memorable EA Sports intro. They have added, despite the fact the audio is in English, English subtitles so you can read it too. We know EA, “It’s in the game”. Once you’ve gotten past that, you get the enjoyment of W.Rooney teeing up for a shot before being able to do anything. Now that you’ve wasted what feels like 20 minutes, you can play.

I’ve only been playing single player season mode for the time, but you can now compare your money making skills with your friend without having to go behind the shed. (If you’ve selected Amateur or Semi-pro then you’re out of luck. Here’s the ol’ ruler).

Now, if you don’t mind, a small digression: All of my other “next-gen” FIFA experiences were for the Xbox360. Having canceled my Live subscription I picked 12 up for the PS3. The first thing I noticed in game was the inability to play music while playing the game, thus I was unable to listen to the melodic and soothing sounds of Glassjaw. If we’re going to have canned announcer barking that I’m a country mile offside whether I actually am or not, can we have someone more poetic than the dry Englishmen Martin Tyler and <del>Andy</del> Alan.

Dear EA,

We are a huge fan of your games. Many people (not as many as WoW)
have lost marriages over this game, and quite a few more have died
over the beautiful game. Please license the greatest announcer of
our time to call our virtual game: Ray Hudson. I would love to give
him "orgasmic jubilation" over my last minute winning goal.

Sincerely,
Geek Gauntlet

Thanks for letting me indulge myself for a minute.

Let’s get to the actual gameplay. The biggest change you’re going to notice is the new defending tactics. You can now push, pull and tug with your defending (team) member. Do it too much or too often and you’ll give away a foul. This has made getting past the opposing side’s defense much more challenging than in previous games. It’s quite a bit more challenging to just dribble you’re way out of a sticky situation as now you’ve got one guy tugging on your shirt and another tickling away the ball.

The next change you may notice if you’re the Messi of sitting on your ass maneuvering sprits on a screen, when you do find yourself in that stick situation with the pulling and the tugging, you’ll be able to come away with clean hands using the new precision dribbling method. You’ll be able to add some Brazilian flair to your game creating space for your men to take advantage of. If you’re more of an ’08 Yura Movsisyan who more often than not fell on his ass as well as more than once missed scoring a goal with a shot so wide it went out on the sidelines then the last feature is for you.

The final major difference makes falling and rolling around in you’re own mistake much more enjoyable. If you give up control of the ball and finish your move prematurely ending up with some upset partners, you’ll be glad to know that you’ll fall on your ass in style with a psuedo-ragdoll engine. EA has changed the canned fall on your ass sequences with an Impact Engine that makes for a more realistic game.

So, should you buy it? Well, if any of these 3 things sound interesting then yes, yes you should. If you want to play online, then yes, yes you should. However if you’re just looking for a way to blow $60 bucks you’ll get much more enjoyment out of a nice bottle of bourbon and a velvet robe. You could even get a pipe if you’ve got cash left over. That or just paypal $60 bucks to me. In fact, nobody should get this game, just Paypal the money you’d have otherwise spent on FIFA12 to me. I swear only to use it for good, namely hookers, blow and clowns. Who doesn’t love a party with clowns? Hitler. That’s who. You don’t want to support Hitler do you?

In all I would rate this game a solid 9 blue balls out of a 10.

Today at work we got a Time Capsule for everyone’s backups. While this may not be the best answer for a company back up solution, it’s still better than what most companies I’ve worked for have for backup solutions (read nothing). With the the Time Capsule in plain sight of the glass door, and everyone’s files saved on them, it would be pretty easy for someone to break in, unplug it, and have a copy of every file on everyone’s computer. To solve this problem you can encrypt your time machine backups. How do I do that you ask? Well, use Apple’s fancy built in feature to. Encrypt the sparsebundle images.

Set up Time Machine to back up to an AFP drive. I don’t think this will work with a local hard drive.

Let Time Machine start backing up, then stop the back up. This will have created <machine_name>_<mac_address>.sparsebundle on the AFP drive.

Disable Time Machine.

Open a Terminal and run these commands:
